How to Train a Puppy: A Gentle Week-by-Week Guide

How to Train a Puppy: A Gentle Week-by-Week Guide

The fastest way to train a puppy is to reward the behavior you want the second it happens, in short, upbeat sessions, and to manage the house so mistakes are hard to make in the first place. You don't need to dominate anything. You need good timing, great treats, and patience. Here's the week-by-week plan we'd start any puppy on. Bear was living proof that an enthusiastic Dalmatian and a bag of chicken can learn almost anything.

The one rule under all puppy training

Reward what you like, prevent what you don't, and never punish a scared or confused puppy. Reward-based training isn't just kinder, it holds up better under stress, which is exactly when you need it. The American Kennel Club's puppy guides land in the same place. Keep sessions to about five minutes and stop while your puppy still wants more.

Weeks 8 to 10: name, potty, and the crate

Start with the basics that make life livable:

Weeks 10 to 12: the socialization window

This is the most important, and most time-limited, part of puppy raising. The prime socialization window closes around 12 to 16 weeks, and calm, positive exposure now shapes the adult dog. Introduce new people, surfaces, sounds, and gentle handling, always at your puppy's pace and paired with treats. Under-socialization is the root of a lot of adult fear and reactivity, so this is the work that prevents problems later. The AKC's socialization checklist is a good reference.

Add easy cues in the same weeks: lure a "sit," reward a "settle" on a mat, and trade for objects so "give" means good things happen.

Weeks 12 to 16: recall, leash, and bite manners

Now build the skills that keep a dog safe. Start a reliable recall indoors and pay generously every time. Introduce the leash in the house before the sidewalk, and reward walking near you rather than correcting pulling, the approach in our loose-leash guide. If teeth touch skin during play, calmly end the game for a moment; puppies learn that soft mouths keep the fun going.

4 to 6 months: proof it, and brace for adolescence

Around this age your "perfect" puppy may act like they've forgotten everything. That's normal adolescence, not defiance. Keep sessions short, raise the value of your rewards, and practice known cues in slightly harder places. Consistency now is what carries the training into adulthood.

When to get help

If your puppy shows real fear, growls or snaps out of context, or isn't house-training after weeks of consistent effort, talk to your vet first to rule out a medical cause, then a certified, reward-based trainer or veterinary behaviorist. Getting help early is a sign you're doing it right, not wrong. For a full step-by-step system, our Dog Training 101 guide takes it from here.

Frequently asked questions

What age should you start training a puppy?

The day they come home, usually around 8 weeks. Puppies are learning constantly from that point, so early, gentle, reward-based training simply channels what they're already doing.

How long should puppy training sessions be?

About five minutes, a few times a day. Puppies have short attention spans, and ending while they're still keen keeps training something they want to do.

What should I teach my puppy first?

Name recognition, potty training, and a positive crate association come first, they make daily life work. Sit, settle, recall, and leash manners follow once those basics are in place.

Is punishment ever necessary in puppy training?

No. Reward-based methods teach faster and don't risk the fear and fallout that punishment can cause. Prevent mistakes with management, and pay well for the behavior you want.
